Chord Symbols.

In a textual context

With chord symbols, a pretty common way of distinguishing between major and minor is a plain capital letter for major, eg A is A major and a capital letter followed by lower case m for minor, eg Cm is C minor. An even briefer version is capital letter for major, as above and lower case letter for minor, eg c is C minor.

Either of these is okay in the context of chord symbols written above a stave in a score, because they can't get mixed up with anything else, but when discussing notes as well as chords in a textual context, it's confusing. So in that case a capital plus a capital M is a major chord and a capital plus a lower case m is a minor chord and a capital on its own is a note.
